Researching the Pros and Cons of Getting Your Degree Online

By Dan Allen Are you considering getting your bachelor’s or master’s or other degree online? It’s a growing field that’s receiving acceptance and approval for all types of career and education goals. The biggest advantage to online degree education is that it’s a complete college degree program that is delivered via the Internet. All classes, materials, tests and lectures are delivered online. This process allows the student to “attend” class from anywhere at any time that is convenient to them. According to educators from Cornell University, the web provides significant new functionality in transmitting information to the student and providing forums for exchange. The web is revolutionizing some areas of study through increased opportunities for learning and alternative formats for information. (Dwyer, Barbieri, and Doerr, 1995). One of the ways it has done this is through enhanced student-to-student and faculty-to-student communication. Students and faculty can both benefit from using the communication and assessment tools that are made available via online learning. The technology also enables students to exercise more flexibility in their approach to education, depending on what best suits their personal learning styles and busy schedules. In addition, the class material and program is continuously updated for up to the minute, real world application. This allows the student to immediately begin applying their new knowledge to their existing work environment. There are many different types of programs available. Students can receive a bachelor’s or master’s degree in many areas such as accounting, marketing, human resources, e-business, information technology, nursing and even elementary education. The typical online program takes three years to complete. A master’s degree program may take up to four years depending on the type of degree sought and the prior education of the student. Most programs are accredited and they usually accept the transfer of prior credits from other accredited universities. Some of them are also well-known off-line schools such as Duke, Stanford, Jones International, and Capella. While enrolled, a student typically takes just one class at a time for a five to six week period. This allows the student to concentrate solely on that material before moving on to the next module of information. The price of an online degree education program is comparable to that of a regular college degree. Plus, many students are eligible for financing in the way of a student loan. Sometimes employer education programs can even reimburse a student’s tuition fees. Keep in mind though, that you may have to be a little more organized and self-motivated for this type of education and you will have to manage time demands in other areas of your life. Because you normally won’t have set class times, it will be up to you to the time into your schedule. Then again, some programs require that you log on to the Internet at designated times for virtual class sessions. Another potential disadvantage is that some employers still prefer that their employees have degrees from traditional colleges. However, these views are rapidly changing. A recent survey of 1,300 graduates and 80 employers asked supervisors to rate the value of the degree earned by their employee compared to a resident school degree in the same field. Sixty-nine percent of the supervisors rated the online degree “just as valuable” or “more valuable” than traditional degrees. This means that one out of three supervisors need to be convinced that an online degree offers the same quality and content as a traditional degree. Plus, traditional brick and mortar universities who offer online courses often make no separation between their programs and the type of degree awarded. And transcripts do not indicate whether a course was done at a distance or on campus. Teddy Bear History

By Sharon Lauer On November 14, 1902, the 26th President of the United States, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, went to Mississippi to settle a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. While there, Roosevelt agreed to join in a bear hunt. Accustomed to a strenuous, physical hunt, he was a bit dismayed by the unfamiliar method of using packs of dogs to track and chase prey leaving the hunter to only wait for his animal Hunting conditions proved unfavorable for the president and late into the day he still hadn’t had success. Determined to find a suitable quarry for his president, guide Holt Collier set off to find him a bear. Tracking a 235 pound bear to a water hole, he clubbed it over the head and tied it to a tree. Roosevelt was then summoned to shoot the bear and claim his prize. The president was unimpressed by the bound, dazed, and bleeding bear. Saying, “Spare the bear! I will not shoot a tethered animal.” He refused his prize and forbade anyone else from claiming it. Reporters with the hunting party spread the news of Roosevelt’s fair play nationwide. Among those inspired by the story was political cartoonist Clifford Berryman. Berryman drew a cartoon of the incident portraying the tethered bear sitting innocently with huge, scared eyes. The cartoon captioned “Drawing the Line in Mississippi” was featured on the front cover of The Washington Post on November 16, 1902. The cartoon was reprinted in newspapers all over the country and Roosevelt’s popularity soared. For the remainder of his political career his mascot was Teddy’s Bear and Berryman continued to use it all his cartoons. It signified to the public how Roosevelt could not be swayed from doing what he thought was right. It is debatable how much of a role it played in his re-election in 1905. As news spread of Roosevelt’s adventure and Berryman’s cartoon the imagination of New York toy storeowners Morris and Rose Michtom was sparked. Using Berryman’s Bear as a guide, they designed a bear very unlike the toy bears available at the time. Toy bears were typically portrayed on all fours with features similar to real bears. The Michtoms new bear was sweet and cuddly, filled with excelsior stuffing and adorned with black buttons for eyes. Rose made two of the bears and they were placed in the store’s window. They became an instant success. The Michtoms then asked President Roosevelt for permission to call the bears “Teddy’s Bears” and the Teddy Bear was born. The demand for Teddy’s Bears was so strong that within a year of its creation the Michtoms closed their candy store. With the help of the wholesale firm, Butler Brothers, the first teddy bear manufacturer in the United States was founded. They called it the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company. It remained a successful business and in 1938 changed its name to Ideal Toy Company. The term Teddy Bear (without the s) first appeared in the October 1906 issue of Playthings Magazine. Soon even the Steiff Company was using it for their bears and it became the accepted term. The teddy bear is the most popular plush toy and it’s possible it’s the most popular of all toys. While other toys have enjoyed their popularity and then disappeared, the teddy bear has stood the test of time. They are bought for our new babies, our friends, and our loved ones. There just doesn’t seem to be an occasion where a teddy bear isn’t just the right gift. We dress them up, make them musical, and treasure them as collector’s pieces and beloved friends. The Long Path Versus The Ultimate Truth

By Marco Negroni MATT: Do you believe in God, yes or no? PETER: Its a stupid question. MATT: Why? PETER: You just explained why. MATT: Did I? PETER: The why question is the meaning of Philosophy. The distinction between human beings and animals is that question; the question by which we are evolving so much and by which we are constructing so many castles in the air. Our specie is characterized by the continue reformulation of our existence reason, given increasing possible solutions as we increase in number and technology. The Why question make us consider our existence and formulate possible explanations to it; it is because of that question that we have researched so much around and inside us for a solution. Religion, science, physics, etc are all different ways to approach the same question and possible ways to find a solution. MATT: So why you think thats the answer? PETER: I never said why is the answer. The majority of people are considering our intellectual evolution a divine intervention, and we assume that our evolving is a positive thing. So are animals in the wrong path because they didnt decide to ask them self the same question as we are? By the way Im not a naturalist. Take an individual and suppose he believes to see somebody who doesnt exist. In this world we are something more than six billions and suppose he is the only one who can see that somebody. For our medical definitions we should refer to that person as a schizophrenic because affected by hallucination, and much more he believes in what he sees, that we cannot see, much more they would consider him sick. Suppose he claims that the individual he sees is God, but not the God for Christianity nor another known religion. Whether Catholic or not, religious people could refer to that person with the same definition expressed by the doctors, but because nowadays society is very concerned with religious matter, both doctors and spiritual people would start to reconsider the fact in a delicate manner. Then come, somebody could be persuaded by his vision considering it to be true. Suppose those people who start to believe in what the person sees become more and more. Then come, if that person convinces more than three billion people to believe in what he sees, doctors should reconsider their first evaluation. MATT: Whats the relation with this example and the existence of God? PETER: Good question. Today the majority of people believe in the existence of a God and their only proof is given by faith; the same faith which could lead more than three billion people to believe in the sight of somebody who before was given for schizophrenic. MATT: Hows possible that a crazy person could convince so many people? PETER: I never said that person was crazy, but I said doctors would have considered him schizophrenic at first. MATT: This is just a problem of words. I mean, how is that possible that a person alone, without any proof, could convince so many people and even the majority of the world population? PETER: This is a good question too, but history has already shown it. People beliefs are based on our life experience and the majority of our ideas are others ideas. You learn to talk and write in your language because you believe in the communication your parents believe in. Much more a person or a thing seems attractive to you, and more it shapes your beliefs; its a process of imitation due to analysis and faith. MATT: So faith is innate? PETER: Faith is part of everybody existence. MATT: But faith in God, is that part of everybody existence? PETER: Im impressed by your capacity of questioning. God is a word we use in this specific language to identify an idea which is different in everybody because everybody is different one to another. MATT: So my God is different from somebody elses God. PETER: You can say your idea of God is different from somebody elses idea of God. The way you perceive God is defined by your being, the religion you believe or not, the ideas of God you have achieved and the choice about them you have made. MATT: So, do I have to assume there is no such a only God because it is hims, hers or itss idea we have in mind, and because of this definition, the number of Gods is the same as the number of ideas related to it? PETER: Im impressed by your capacity. God, or the multitude of ideas we relate to God in this world is defined by the sum of the ideas about God, whether one, many, or uncountable, male female or asexual, etc and because God, or the ideas we refer to him are limited because increasing or decreasing every day, God can be defined by the infinite ideas by which we define him. MATT: What about people who claim to perceive God in his perfect form, and even if they are not able to explain him, they can feel his infinite greatness. PETER: Somebody claims to feel God, somebody claims to perceive a part of the entity of God, and somebody claims to not feel God at all. By the fact that there is no proof of God existence we cannot demonstrate that God exists, but because theres no proof of God non-existence we cannot prove he doesnt exist at all. When we are asked to think about God we create or interpret an idea we have in mind. People who claim to perceive God are all quite agreed to say they perceive God as infinite. MATT: So God has to be the infinite. PETER: So you claim that God cannot be finite. MATT: Yes I believe God cannot be finite, because it would mean that it would be like one of us. PETER: So if God is infinite? What is infinite? MATT: Infinite is something so big that it is bigger than everything I can imagine PETER: So, what is infinite has to be infinite big because we cannot think about something bigger, but suppose I think about the universe and imagine ten constellations and then I realize the infinite has to be bigger then that so I imagine eleven and twelve constellations. In the moment I achieve a bigger idea I increase the limit of infinite. MATT: Yes, and infinite is exactly the concept you have expressed: something that has no limit. PETER: A good definition, but suppose we use it to consider another infinite form; think about something extremely small, after all to imagine something infinite small is as difficult as considering something extremely big. Suppose you try to imagine the infinite smallest thing you can. Then come, every time you consider a form you realize you can imagine something smaller, and every time you conclude there is something even smaller. So, the infinite process takes place also in this case. MATT: Yes, because in this case too, infinite has no limit, so we can go on and on forever. PETER: So, we have demonstrated your definition, except, suppose I ask you whats the difference between the infinite smallest thing you can imagine and nothing, what would be your answer? MATT: The smallest thing exists and nothing not. PETER: Why one exists and the other doesnt? MATT: Because of the words meaning. PETER: You are right, the meaning of their words imply the presence or not of thing, but can you prove that one exists and the other doesnt? If you consider a thing, something that you can see with your eyes, like this book and you try to think to the smallest book you can, you begin to break pieces of the book like pages. Every page you cut the smallest the book becomes, and the more close to nothing it is. You keep going until there are no more pages, so you begin to resize the cover by taking apart pieces of it. The smallest the book becomes, again, the closer to nothing becomes. Suppose you keep going forever, and you can cut it with your mind, where would you end up? MATT: I would get with something even smaller then what I can imagine. There would be nothing in my hands. PETER: So as you say you couldnt even imagine it because of its infinite small size. And by the same process of imaging nothing you would imagine something infinite close to nothing, but not nothing. Now, how would you prove that nothing does exist, using the example by which you resize the book? After all your consideration, you would realize that even by opposite perspectives, infinite is not definable by a static concept. Imagine that nothing exists but we cant imagine it, so convey with me that nothing would be at least equal to the smallest thing we can imagine, but this is not in line with your definition, because in this case the infinite smallest thing wouldnt be smallest than nothing. Suppose I ask you to consider them and then decide which is the smallest, would you reconsider you definition of infinite? MATT: So whats the real definition of infinite? PETER: The concept we have in mind of Infinite is not the limit or things as by the definition you gave to me or by the one in the example before. The smallest thing in its limit equals nothing but the process of achieving a limit characterizes our idea of infinite. MATT: So, by imaging the process to achieve a limit we abstract the idea of infinite. PETER: No. To perceive the infinite as a concept is like to achieve something unachievable. By imaging the process to achieve a limit we dont imagine infinite, although we start the path which ends in the achievement of the idea of infinite. Because our mind is finite, as all the three components of our existence: space, time and matter, we are able to achieve the finite concepts of things as the finite forms of ideas. MATT: But if God, as the infinite smallest thing, is something so small, than nobody can see it and maybe nobody will ever see it; or, as the infinite biggest thing, it is something so big that nobody can see it and maybe nobody will ever see it; does it mean we should not believe in its existence because there is no way we will prove the existence of God? PETER: What is smaller between nothing and the infinite smallest thing? Then come that the idea that God doesnt exist is not that far from the idea of the infinite form we try to achieve in our mind. But if there is not a big difference in between infinite and finite, whether there was, why could not be God everything, whether existing and infinite big; or nothing, whether not existing and infinite small? Whether existing or not, everything or nothing, God is the limit we need in order exist. MATT: So, why if you believe in God, yes or no, is a stupid question? PETER: Because whether answering yes or no we define our limitation of thinking and we decline the real value of the question do you believe in God for its value as a question with no answer, which intrinsically contains the power to increase our reason, and whether existing or not our idea of God. Dating in the 40 Plus Age Group

By Keith Londrie Youngsters and those in their adult years have gone through this rite of passage called courting Online. Courting has many benefits. A common question among friends these days is whether or not singles should try to meet their ideal partner through internet courting. This method of meeting other singles, although relatively new, is now being looked at as a favorable way to communicate with like minded singles. As more people flock online, there are people ever more eager to jump on the courting bandwagon. Whatever your thoughts on the matter, the web has changed the way the general public searches for partners. Unless you date outside your box you will never know if maybe someone different just might be your type. Take that first step and try some online dating sites to see if there is someone compatable with you. I venture to say that you will be amazed at the results. Courting sites offer many different options as far as what you can say you are looking for in a relationship. Using an internet dating service to find dates was once frowned upon and even considered scary. Allow the incredible opportunity of internet dating to work for you. After all, you do not need to meet someone in person, unless you choose to do so. Most internet dating sites have help should you have any questions or need assistance. If you live in one of the major developed countries such as America or Canada, you will find that the majority of websites are centered around these countries as they lead the field in the area of online dating development. Report to the web site what you need and want in a relationship. Since it’s free to sign up and post your facts and spitting image to most internet courting websites, many of the people take that step despite no intentions of going further. You can test the waters, so to speak. Pen pal romance or online dating wouldn’t change how people at large view a person, it changes the way they fall in love. As more woman are becoming completely comfortable despite online communication and more woman have access to Internet at home and at work, online dating sites have flourished. The online world has revolutionised the way we work, shop, conduct our financial affairs, and entertain ourselves. To use it as a medium for meeting untapped common people is a logical step in our fast changing world. Depression is Underdiagnosed in College Students

By Susan Fee Everyone feels down or blue once in awhile. Especially during difficult times, its normal to feel sad or discouraged. But when those feelings persist for two weeks or longer, it could be depression. Its a common illness that affects an estimated 19 million Americansthats nearly one in ten! Its also one of the most under-diagnosed illnesses on college campuses. The symptoms can come on so slowly that one day, a person realizes that he cant remember the last time he felt good. Here are some warning signs for depression: Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness Loss of interest or enjoyment in things that used to be fun Decreased energy, fatigue Restlessness, irritability Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions Trouble sleeping, or oversleeping Appetite or weight changes Thoughts of suicide Many students suffer needlessly. Depression is often very treatable. Not everyone experiences every symptom, and the severity can vary over time. Depression is not something you can just snap out of and make better on your own. This assumption can reinforce feelings of hopelessness and failure. Its important to seek outside help. Through counseling and, in some cases, medication, the majority of people notice significant improvement! If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above for two weeks or longer, heres what you need to do today: Make an appointment with a counselor on campus. Your counselor can screen you for depression and get you the immediate help you need. Do not spend another day suffering in silence! The Truth About Weight Loss

By Valerie Priester Lose 10 pounds in 10 days, the secret to quick weight loss, and lose 30 pounds in 30 daysetc. Surely you heard them all, and let us not forget all the fad diets that are associated with these unrealistic claims. Here are just a few from the last 5 10 years; the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, the ice cream diet, and the 3-day diet. Is it possible to lose weight with these diets, yes; is it true body fat that is lost, no. In most cases the weight lost using these fad diets is nothing more than water weight. Over the past 15 years I have struggled with my weight and I like most Americans have tried all the fad diets under the sun and a few under the clouds as well. When it comes to losing weight I consider myself a self-taught expert on the subject. Expertise Im sure I share with many people who have tried diet after diet over the years also. In fact, the reason you are probably reading this article is because you are searching for yet another magic, quick, and painless way to lose unwanted pounds. Have you noticed that you can find more of these unwarranted diet claims during the first quarter of every year? You see the diet industry is a multi-million dollar industry and they know millions of people will make the same New Years Resolution year after year lose weight and get in shape; they bank on it, literally. Americans want a quick fix, much like our style of life these days. We look for the easiest and most painless way to lose weight. Unfortunately, losing weight is not an overnight success; in most cases it takes months to lose weight properly. What is properly you say, well that would be losing the weight and keeping it off. Now, are you ready for the truth about weight loss? The big secret is this; burn more calories than you eat. Yes, that is the secret no more, no less. Out of all the books, diet plans, and diet programs I have read and performed they all say the same thing in a nutshell; eat less, move more. I know, this is easier said than done and we have all tried it with little success. If we were successful with our quest to lose weight you would not have to read this article and there would be no need for me to write this article. S with that said we are in this boat together. Here are few tips that have helped me over the years and believe it or not they helped me reach my goal weight at least three times. 1. Keep a food journal make yourself accountable for what you put in your mouth. 2. Clean out your pantry get rid of all the temptations and dont buy them during your weight loss journey. 3. Modify your behavior if you tend to eat while watching TV, change that habit and exercise while watching your favorite shows. In most cases you can complete a half hour to an hour of exercise before you know it. 4. Think when you feel the urge to eat something decadent, count to twenty. This momentary pause will give you time to think. 5. Eat at the table ONLY take time to enjoy your meals. 6. Use smaller plates a smaller plate means less food consumption. 7. No seconds train yourself to eat the correct portions and once the food on your SMALLER plate is gone tell yourself that you are satisfied. 8. Change your inner dialogue speak only positive things to yourself. Your inner dialogue can influence your behavior. 9. Exercise at least 3 times a week you dont have to belong to a gym to get a good workout, walk for 30 minutes in your neighborhood. 10. Build a support system surround yourself with supportive people, this is not a journey to take alone. I hope these tips help you reach your weight loss goals. As for me, I will take my own advice and start over once again. Oh yeah, the very best tip I can give you is; never give up, even if you have to start over each day until you get it right. As you successfully complete one day start anew the next day. If you slip and fall get up and start anew the next meal. YOU CAN DO IT! The Two For One Diet

By Ken Collins Are you trying to loose a few pounds, but cant keep yourself away from eating out? Try the two for one diet. You will loose weight, save money and have more fun than any other diet. The concept behind the diet is simple: share your food with a friend. Restaurants give FAR too much food for one person to eat at a single serving. Typically people either take the extra portion to-go (for late night snacking) or they loosen the belt, and swallow the rest down. The two for one diet encourages you to SHARE your dish with a friend. If you are the type who likes to order appetizers, a main course and then dessert, you probably find it very difficult to stick to any sort of diet while out to eat. The Two For One Diet makes it easy to taste everything while maintaining reasonably healthy portions. Share an appetizer, share a meal, share a dessert its that simple. Question: What kind of diet lets you eat appetizers, a meal and the dessert? Answer: A good diet. You see, if you can eat what ever you want, you are more likely to stick to a diet, and will have a more, well rounded diet. Diets that encourage you to cut out your carbs or fats or sugars are just unreasonable, and in the long run will cause you to limit your diet, and thus rob you of the full range of nutrition available in the foods you cut out. The real key to dieting (and Im not the first to say it) EAT LESS FOOD. Its that simple. So why is it that when we go out to eat, we order appetizers, full meals and desserts and try to consume them in the proportions given to us? The fact is, going out to eat can be a healthy way to socialize and get out and about. But if you stuff yourself until your button pops, youll be tired and lazy and ready for a nap. Heres a thought. Start your own Two For One dieting group. In a group setting, you can order more dishes and desserts, and share between the group. Just make sure to keep the ratio at two to one, so that everyone is sharing and nobody is forced to consume a full meal all by themselves. If you regularly took all your out to eat sessions per week and turned them into Two For One dieting sessions, you will loose weight, save money and have more fun because you wont be so stuffed you cant move. You will not go hungry on the two for one diet, and you dont have to deprive yourself of the tastes you love. You do not have to limit what items on the menu you can or can not eat, and most of all, you dont have to pay for it later with all the extra pounds that restaurant eating can put on. Spread the word and start your own two for one diet or dieting club. Get your friends involved. Imagine meeting once a week to chat and eat and laugh and eat, and dieting all the while. Oh what a perfect world it could be. Organizing Your Embroidery Designs – On A Budget!

By Dan Wyszynski While there are many software packages out there that will help you organize and catalog your items (whether it be designs, images, music, etc.), many, if not most, are costly, confusing and yet-another-thing to learn. Today I want to tackle the task of organizing your designs on the cheap. We will just use the standard Windows file system (though this can be readily done on a Mac). I am going to talk about methods of organizing, not any OS-specific functionality, so this can be readily applied to any type of file on any system. So the first thing we need to analyze is what kind of designs we have, and what would be our best strategy for beginning to organize them. With that in mind, we need to figure out how many ways we can categorize them. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few possibilities right away: Few or same designers (One/Few particular company(ies) or your own) Many designers Design collections Genre or sub-type of designs (animals, flowers, etc.) Size of designs (We should make a mental note about these, since changing the size by more than 20% degrades the quality of the design, and from my experience, thats even pushing it). Organize Let’s see if we can create some possible structures for the examples above. Let’s take the first case of having just a few different designers, or you digitize your own designs. If we are sure that the amount of designers is going to stay static and you will not be growing the number of different design suppliers, then it would make sense to start thinking about what kind of designs you have. If you have a specific target audience, let’s say you do baby clothing or pet items, then your categories could be limited to Boy/Girl/Pet type, Seasons, Holidays, etc. One thing to keep in mind as we start subdividing the categories is that you can get pretty granular, but there’s a point of diminishing returns. What we want is the ability to think, “OK, I need a bib design for a baby girl that has a cute Christmas saying” and be able to know exactly where in your computer it resides. So let’s start building our catalog. We have, as examples, the following starting directories: [top-level]/Baby Designs/Boy/Holidays/Christmas [top-level]/Baby Designs/Boy/Holidays/Thanksgiving [top-level]/Baby Designs/Boy/Holidays/New Year [top-level]/Baby Designs/Girl/Holidays/Christmas [top-level]/Baby Designs/Girl/Holidays/Thanksgiving [top-level]/Baby Designs/Girl/Holidays/New Year Notice how we structured based off the gender. If your business is less reactive (on-demand), then a variation of the above could be more beneficial to you: [top-level]/Baby Designs/Holidays/Christmas/Boy [top-level]/Baby Designs/Holidays/Christmas/Girl [top-level]/Baby Designs/Holidays/Thanksgiving/Boy [top-level]/Baby Designs/Holidays/Thanksgiving/Girl [top-level]/Baby Designs/Holidays/New Year/Boy [top-level]/Baby Designs/Holidays/New Year/Girl The choice of how to subdivide the categories is very important, and can only be done after analyzing your own personal needs. If our business is not as targeted, and we use many different sources of designs, then we have a different situation. What we need todo is, once again, look at our customer base and the type of work we’re asked to do. [top-level]/Designer 1/Holidays/… [top-level]/Designer 1/Animals/… [top-level]/Designer 1/Flowers/… Again, this is subject to how you work. We could just as well do the following: [top-level]/Holidays/Designer 1/… [top-level]/Animals/Designer 1/… [top-level]/Flowers/Designer 1/… Putting it all together, we could have the following structures: [top-level]/Baby/Bibs/Bunnies [top-level]/Baby/Bibs/Bears [top-level]/Baby/Bibs/Flowers [top-level]/Bags/Fleur De Lis [top-level]/Bags/Lace [top-level]/Shirts/Holidays/Christmas [top-level]/Shirts/Holidays/Halloween [top-level]/Shirts/Holidays/Thanksgiving [top-level]/Socks/Holidays/Christmas/Snowmen [top-level]/Socks/Holidays/Christmas/Snowflakes So there you have some suggestions on how to organize your designs, and keep things where you can find them. Next column, I will build on this concept, and show you how you can tag the designs you own for easy searching. Aleve, Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra: What You Need To Know About Arthritis Pain Medications

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=R.L._Fielding] R.L. Fielding Recent controversy about the safety of pain medications for arthritis has left patients and health care professionals alike confused about which medications are safe to use. In fact, a recent survey by the Boston-based Rippe Lifestyle Institute indicated that many people with arthritis are suffering unnecessarily because they have stopped or reduced their use of pain relievers due to confusion about which drugs are considered safe. The survey also showed that now, more than ever, those with arthritis need to understand the benefits and possible side effects associated with all arthritis pain medications. In order to do so, people with arthritis, their caregivers and families must be familiar with recent news about the two types of drugs most commonly used to treat arthritis pain non-selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and another group of NSAIDs known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) specific inhibitors. COX-2 specific inhibitors vs. Other NSAIDs COX-2 specific inhibitors are the newest members of the NSAID class of medications. Available by prescription only, they became widely used in recent years to reduce joint pain and swelling. COX-2 specific inhibitors work by selectively blocking, or inhibiting, one of the two enzymes associated with inflammation. Some experts think that this selective inhibition may be one reason for some of the negative side effects currently associated with COX-2 specific inhibitors. Non-selective NSAIDs were developed earlier than COX-2 specific inhibitors and have been widely used to relieve arthritis pain and inflammation for many years. Unlike COX-2 specific inhibitors, non-selective NSAIDs inhibit both major enzymes involved in the inflammatory process, COX-1 and COX-2. The non-selective NSAID category includes a number of different medications that are available in both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) products. Timeline of Events To understand the current state of affairs, it is important to understand the sequence of events. The controversy started when a study published in the October 21, 2004, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine cited the COX-2 specific inhibitor, Vioxx as potentially causing major adverse events, including heart attack and stroke, among patients taking the drug. As a result, Merck (the drugs manufacturer) voluntarily withdrew Vioxx from the market. However, in the months following, the safety of the other available COX-2 specific inhibitors such as Celebrex and Bextra, as well as other arthritis pain medications in the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) class, were also called into question. Consequently, in February 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) convened a special Advisory Committee, made up of members of the Arthritis and Drug Safety Advisory Committees, to review the cardiovascular safety of these arthritis pain medications. FDA Directive: Stronger Warning Labels for Some Pain Medications On April 7, 2005, taking into account the recommendations of the Advisory Committee, the FDA issued the following directives: Bextra, a COX-2 specific inhibitor manufactured by Pfizer, was withdrawn from the market. All prescription NSAIDs must revise their labeling to include a black box warning that highlights the potential increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) events as well as the potentially life threatening gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding associated with these drugs. Celebrex, the only COX-2 specific inhibitor remaining on the US market, was included in this directive. All OTC NSAIDs (except aspirin) will be required to revise their labeling to include more specific information about the potential for GI and CV side effects, a stronger reminder to follow label instructions, as well as a warning about potential skin reactions. To further evaluate the potential for increased CV risk, the FDA also announced that all NSAIDs must conduct and submit to the FDA a comprehensive review and analysis of pertinent safety data from clinical trials. Aleve (naproxen sodium) is supported by clinical studies conducted to gain approval of naproxen as a prescription product and as OTC that do not provide any evidence of increased risk of cardiovascular events. Treatment Options: What Should Arthritis Patients Know? For some people who suffer from pain associated with arthritis, their symptoms can be managed with exercise, heat/cold therapy, joint protection, assistive devices, weight control, or in some severe cases, surgery. For others, medications are needed to help manage the symptoms associated with arthritis. When taken as directed OTC medications such as Aleve provide a safe and effective way to treat mild to moderate pain of minor arthritis. If patients have questions, they should consult their health care professional about which treatment option is most appropriate. Why Its Important to Treat Arthritis Arthritis affects approximately 66 million Americans and is the nations leading cause of disability. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, and they all have different symptoms that vary in severity from person to person. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis, is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage that causes the bones to rub together, resulting in pain, loss of movements and stiffness. Arthritis is usually a chronic condition. For more information on Aleve and naproxen, visit the Aleve website at [http://www.aleve.com] www.aleve.com. Are Sobriety Checkpoints Legal?

By Lance Knowlton As many people know, the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States forbids the unreasonable search or seizure of U.S. citizens. Generally, there must be probable cause to arrest or search persons or their private property, which means that the officer must have a reasonable suspicion based on articulable facts that some wrongdoing has occurred. How, then, are law enforcement agents able, constitutionally, to stop motorists at sobriety checkpoints? According to constitutional law, some stops are not considered seizures of a person. This is the case with a so called “stop and frisk” in which an officer detains a person for a very brief period of time and quickly checks their outer clothing for contraband. Sometimes, if a person is detained for less than 48 hours, it is not considered a seizure. However, this is not true for DUI roadblocks. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that stopping someone at such a roadblock does constitute a seizure of that person under the Fourth Amendment. One “however” further and the language of the Constitution gets tangled up in the thicket of constitutional interpretation and case law. The Supreme Court could have claimed that these stops without probable cause are constitutional under the doctrine of exigent circumstances. The Court has repeatedly held that when an officer believes evidence is about to be destroyed, he can perform a search without a warrant. However, this doctrine seems only to apply to searches. Instead, it appears as though the Court used a balancing test, common in other areas of constitutional law, whereby the “minimal intrusion on individual liberties” was weighed against the need for and efficacy of roadblocks and found to be less important. To some, it seems that the Court has simply carved out of the Constitution another exception, similar to the one for exigent circumstances, for sobriety checkpoints. DUI defense attorneys often refer to this as “the DUI exception to the Constitution.” Critics and dissenting justices have pointed out that the Fourth Amendment does not make exceptions. The only question is whether the officer has probable cause to stop the individual driver. Justice Brennan wrote, “That stopping every car might make it easier to prevent drunken driving…is an insufficient justification for abandoning the requirement of individualized suspicion.” The Court’s justification for the exception rested on the assumption that DUI roadblocks are necessary and effective. However, there is some controversy as to whether this is true. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released data on alcohol-related deaths in 2003 and 2004. There was a decline in such fatalities in 2004, and most of the drop occurred in states that don’t use sobriety checkpoints. Critics already concerned about the large outlay of resources required to operate checkpoints are doubly concerned if spending the resources does not even necessarily prevent DUI offenses. On the other hand, law enforcement agents believe that checkpoints are effective even if intoxicated drivers get around them because they spread the message that driving under the influence is not tolerated. Officers often provide informational pamphlets to motorists stopped at checkpoints, explaining the consequences of drunk driving, which may have a deterrent effect.
